Cyber Center: Rethinking PRC Web Strategy
Each year, Google, Yahoo & MSN publish lists of the most used search terms; few people realize those lists are scrubbed squeaky clean--censored of all sex related search terms. However, pornography on the web is alive and flourishing. While 7% of all internet traffic takes place with search engines, 13% of all internet traffic involves pornographic websites.
Second Life, the popular virtual world, boasts itself to be a flourishing platform for virtual commerce, but they don’t brag about the fact that 30% or more of the transactions there relate to sex or gambling. 1.7% of the search results at AOL, MSN & Yahoo are sexually explicit. 1.1% of websites catalogued at Google & MSN are sexually explicit. The online porn industry is difficult to measure but is valued at well over $1 billion per year.
93% of all Americans between 12 and 17 years old use the internet. 89% of online teens use the internet at least once a week. 61% use it daily. 42% of internet users aged 10 to 17 said they’d seen online pornography in a recent 12 month span. Of those, 66% said they did not want to view the images and had not sought them out. “It’s so common now, who hasn’t seen something like that?” said one 17 year old girl.
71% of the total adults in the US are online. 87% of adults 18-29 are online, 83% of adults 30-49 are online, 65% of adults 50-64 are online, and 32% of adults age 65 and older are online.
While porn websites see their market share of web traffic gradually decline as social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace, etc.) rapidly grow, adult sites are resorting to more aggressive marketing tactics. As photo (e.g. Flickr.com) & video sharing sites (e.g. Metacafe.com, Youtube.com) rapidly gain popularity, porn webmasters upload teaser photos/videos amidst family safe content hoping to lure viewers to their adult websites.
Our children, teens, college students and adults are surrounded by an ever increasingly aggressive sex agenda. With just a few clicks, a 9 year old boy will know, see & hear light years more than he ever would with any high school sex education course offered by even the most liberal teacher. Not only is the 13 year old across the street susceptible to this, but even the core of those in our churches. The sexual agenda is moving in full force, and nobody is immune.
How will centers respond to this open door—this opportunity to reach out into cyberspace and make a difference for the Kingdom? We challenge you to rethink your online presence. Consider starting a cyber ministry, even a cyber center. Instead of just a website, begin addressing the web as the location for your next center branch. Develop online resources to equip the church in the fight for sexual purity. Develop pure sex websites, showing the millions who scour the web what sex, relationships & family are really all about. Imagine a real, local online resource for all things sexual from a holy perspective, focusing on sacred marriage and providing helpful resources on sexual addiction (it’s more pervasive than you ever dreamed) and post abortive healing. The possibilities are endless, but the need is more real now than it’s ever been.
